Phase II Facility Expansion

Concept Design

Oct 28, 2007

The Building Executive Committee is pleased to present our plans to expand our facility.  The concept design presented here is a result of the dedicated work of all committee members but in particular the Executive Committee recognizes members of the Design and Construction subcommittee who worked closely with Alexander Design Studio to develop it.  This concept design meets the Phase II Facility Requirements and the committee believes it can be built within our cost constraints.  In Sept of 2007 this concept design was approved by the Board of Trustees and Session.

The concept is to build a large addition to the north and west of the existing Ministry Center building and a small bump-out to the south.  By expanding our facility in this way both the Potter’s House and the trailer classrooms remain intact.  The site plan shows the footprint of the existing Ministry Center in black and white and the new construction in blue.  Notice the Potter’s House remains usable as do the trailers, although the trailers are not shown on this drawing.  Also notice that the expansion approximately doubles the facility space.  Looking at the facility from 108 you can see how the design complements the existing architectural features.   As you look at the north view, the west view, the south view, and east view notice how the architect uses an ample amount of glass providing light into the lobby.  The small bump-out to the south contains the stage in the upper level, with storage below.  Also, notice entrances from both the north and south.

The main level floor-plan shows the lobby area in yellow, the new nursery in green, new storage in brown, new restrooms in blue, and other new spaces in orange.  Newcomers entering the building from the north parking lot will see, immediately in front of them, a welcoming center, the donut shaped counter shown in the drawing.  Also easily locatable are the entrance to the worship room, the nursery, and restrooms.    The drawing shows worship oriented such that the congregation is facing south toward the stage bump-out.  A new elevator is located near the north entrance, as is the stairway to the lower level.

The lower level floor-plan shows additional classrooms in green and a small warming kitchen in red.  The large room on the north side of the building is the Community room.  It is designed to divide into two classrooms using movable partitions.   The classrooms on the west side of the build also make use of movable partitions.  With the partitions in place eight new classroom spaces will be available for Sunday morning.  In addition to these new classrooms there are three vacated nursery rooms on the lower level.

The Design and Construction Committee will continue to work closely with the architect to refine this design and produce a schematic design set.  As the committee maps our Sunday morning and week day programs to our entire facility some rooms may be refined for specific uses, such as music rehearsal room, library,  maintenance/shop, board room, etc.
